Why The Human Mile exists

The Human Mile exists to restore humanity to people after the rest of the world has reduced them to a headline, a diagnosis, a stereotype, a mistake, or a single moment.

Every person has a story that cannot be understood by a single moment.

We live in a culture that moves quickly to conclusions. Headlines become verdicts, mistakes become identities, and people’s lives are often reduced to the worst thing they have done, the loudest opinion they have shared, or the briefest glimpse of their circumstances. Judgment is easy when we know very little.

The Human Mile was created to slow that process down.

Each article explores the behaviors, relationships, systems, identities, families, and communities that shape the human experience. Rather than asking whether someone is right or wrong, we ask a different question: What happened along the way that brought this person here?

That question does not excuse harmful behavior, nor does it require agreement. It simply recognizes that understanding and judgment are not the same thing. Human behavior becomes clearer when we consider the experiences, environments, relationships, and systems that influence it.

The Human Mile exists to make space for thoughtful conversations about difficult subjects. By examining life’s uncomfortable questions with curiosity, evidence, and compassion, we hope to help readers see themselves in others and others in themselves. Every person walks a different mile, and every mile has a story worth understanding.
